If you want to make a first impression guests won't forget, set aside some time to spruce up your foyer. Here's how you can do it.

Your foyer is the first thing visitors see when they walk into your home, so it's just as important for first impressions as overall curb appeal. Walk through a few South Bend homes for sale, and you'll find that while they all have different style foyers, all of them meet a few vital needs: a welcoming place for guests, a staging area for arriving or leaving, and a mood-setter for the style of decor you'll find throughout the rest of the house. Here are a few tips that will help make your foyer wow anyone who walks through the door.

  • Choose a style. Your foyer should set the mood for the rest of the house. Is your decor country and cozy? Elegant and understated? Modern and sophisticated? Choose a theme that reflects your style, and design your foyer around it.

  • Keep it simple. Remember, first impressions matter, and a cluttered foyer can easily give a guest a false impression or turn away a potential buyer. Keep your decor to just a few elements, such as a bench or table, a mirror or wall art, and some greenery. Even if your goal is a homey look, you want it also to seem inviting and welcoming.

  • Hang a mirror. Our real estate agents love mirrors when staging homes for sale. Not only are they neutral decor, perfect for allowing homebuyers to envision themselves living in your house, they also do a fantastic job of brightening up any room. Mirrors reflect light as well as give an illusion of more space, making your foyer seem brighter and airier. As an added bonus, they also give you a convenient place to check your appearance before leaving the house.

  • Provide storage. The best way to prevent a foyer from becoming messy is to make sure there's enough storage to catch all of the clutter that ends up by the door. If you don't have a hall closet, think of trendy ways to provide storage. A shoe rack, a couple of baskets, and coat hooks are all good options. If you're staging your home while you're selling it, make sure you minimize any real clutter to avoid overwhelming the buyer's first impressions of the house.

  • Have a seat... or two. Whether you're coming or going, you may need a place to sit, perhaps to put on or take off your shoes. A chair or bench also provides a good place to set something down momentarily. Even more importantly, a bench or a pair of chairs in the foyer can look very welcoming to a guest or potential buyer. Just make sure not to crowd the foyer, as doing so will make the space look smaller.

  • Add a table. A table can serve many purposes in the foyer, both practical and decorative. You can keep a tray or basket on the table for keeping things like keys when you arrive at home. A lamp or a houseplant can make the space look very cozy and welcoming. If you don't have space for a table, consider a wide shelf placed about table height to serve the same purpose while achieving a look that's much less crowded.

Your foyer tells visitors and prospective buyers a lot about your house before they even get through the front door. Are you curious about what your foyer says about your home? Contact us today, and one of our agents will make sure your foyer tells homebuyers all the right things to get them to fall in love.
